Wear of Polyethylene against Metal-ceramic Composite Femoral Component: Effect of Aggressive Kinematic Conditions
ثبت نشده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Zirconium is a metal with excellent biocompatibility, which when oxidized is converted to the ceramic, zirconia. Composite-bearing materials have recently become available consisting of a metal zirconium core with an oxidized zirconia surface. The metal-ceramic composite has the wear characteristics of a ceramic bearing but with a much lower propensity for fracture. This dual advantage makes it an attractive alternative as a bearing surface for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Wear properties of this material in TKA are under investigation and have been encouraging under relatively benign kinematics and loading conditions. This study was designed to determine, if the advantages of low wear were also seen under aggressive kinematics and loading conditions.

Wear Evaluation of Sequentially Crosslinked UHMWPE when subjected to Metal Debris
INTRODUCTION: Metal on metal bearings exhibit a biphasic wear mode, starting with a ‘bedding-in’ period of higher wear followed by a lower steady wear which may have favorable total wear [1]. However, there are cases of ‘run-away’ wear resulting in significantly higher total wear for the metal on metal bearing [2,3]. Many of these ‘run-away’ cases need to be revised which brings up the followin...
متن کاملQuantification of third-body damage and its effect on UHMWPE wear with different types of femoral head.
We examined stainless-steel, cobalt-chrome, titanium and alumina and zirconia ceramic femoral heads retrieved at revision surgery. All the heads had articulated against ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cups. We studied the simulation of third-body damage and the wear of UHMWPE against the various materials used for the heads. The surfaces of the retrieved heads were ...
متن کاملWear of Highly Cross-linked Polyethylene against Cobalt Chrome and Ceramic Femoral Heads
+*Jennings, L M; *Galvin, A L; *Fisher J +Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering, Leeds, UK [email protected] Introduction There is increasing interest in the coupling of highly cross-linked polyethylene with large diameter heads in the hip, due to the reported lower wear characteristics of highly cross-linked polyethylene compared to conventional polyethylene [1, 2, 3]. Further, ...
متن کاملThe Influence of Edge Loading on the Wear of Fourth Generation Ceramic-on-Ceramic Bearing in Total Hip Replacements
INTRODUCTION Ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings in total hip replacements (THR) have become of great interest due to the substantial improvements in the manufacturing techniques and material properties [1]. They have substantially lower wear rates than metal or ceramic on polyethylene bearings [2] and wear particles were found to be less biologically active than particles produced by other types...
متن کاملLong-term performance of ceramic and metal femoral heads on conventional polyethylene in young and active patients: a matched-pair analysis.
BACKGROUND Ceramic femoral heads produce less wear of the opposing polyethylene than do metal femoral heads in wear simulation studies. This is a matched-pair analysis of the wear of ceramic and metal femoral heads on conventional polyethylene in uncemented total hip replacements in young, active patients at a minimum of fifteen years of follow-up. METHODS From June 1989 to May 1992, thirty-o...
